Castello Orsini Hotel - Nerola

Set in the low mountains 50 kilometres north of Rome, the Castello Orsini Hotel is housed in a large 10th century castle on a clifftop overlooking the foothills and the Tiber Valley. The 51 guestrooms feature medieval themed decor with original stone walls and floors, brocade bedspreads in red, blue, burgundy or gold, velour curtains and colourful tapestries with coats of arms. All are equipped with cable television, telephones, minibars, and complimentary newspapers. Bathrooms include showers and bathrobes.
The castle is an art gallery and museum of sorts, showcasing oil paintings and medieval artefacts such as armour and weapons. Guests can unwind in one of the numerous fireside lounges, whose ancient stone walls are decorated with tapestries and original frescoes, or enjoy views of the Tiber Valley from the half acre landscaped garden. The Ristorante Castello Orsini serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a long room complete with medieval ovens, which once functioned as the castle's kitchen. The ever changing Italian menu includes fresh pasta and lots of herbs. Two other dining rooms are available for banquets and receptions. Adventurous guests can follow the challenging hiking trail that winds down the hill and back, and the hotel houses an outdoor pool that features a retractable plastic dome for use in cooler weather. The onsite beauty centre offers massage, tanning and facial treatments. The hotel is sited 22 kilometres from the ruins of the Emperor Hadrian's second century villa at Tivoli, and 24 kilometres from Villa d'Este, the remarkable 16th century palace where the disgraced cardinal Ippolito d'Este spent his forced retirement. Fiumicino International Airport is 70 kilometres away and can be reached by car in approximately 60 minutes.
